How to to apply a shade (a background color) to selected text or to complete paragraph(s) in QuarkXpress 2017

Applies to- Applies to MAC and WIndows
QuarkXPress now adds a feature to apply a shade (a background color) to selected text or to complete paragraph(s). You can also set frame around the text with or without text shading.

How it works:
  1. You can select a text range or paragraph(s) and choose the shading and frame options available under Text Shading tab introduced on Measurement palette.
  2. You can also create Text Shading Styles by going into Edit menu or by opening new Text Shading Styles palette.
  3. The Shading and Frame settings are independent although you can define both the settings in a single Text Shading Style.
  4. Now, let us go through the various shading and frame attributes to apply to different text formatting use cases. Please note the following:
    1. If you simply place the cursor in a paragraph and apply a Text Shading style, the shading/frame applies to entire paragraph. The scope for text shading/framing is “Paragraph”.

  1. If you select a text range within a single paragraph, it applies text shading to selected text only. The scope here is the “Text” selection.

  1. If you select a text range across two or more paragraphs (with a paragraph break in the selection), the default scope remains “Paragraph”.

  1. All above three options are contextually changed when a Text Shading Style is applied. However, if you are using measurement palette, you much select the scope from “Apply To” combo list as shown below. Apply to options are not available in the Style Sheet. if you refer a Text Shading Style in Paragraph Stylesheet, then Apply to scope is “Paragraph” and if you refer the same Text Shading Style in Character Stylesheet then the scope is “Text”.

e. Shading Length:

i. Indent: This is a default option with shading follows the text indents. See below text with left and right indent values set in paragraph formatting.

ii. Text: it follows the text length of longest line in the applied paragraph as shown below.

iii.  Column: it always fills the shading column wide and does not honor the text length or indents set. An example text shown below.

f. Clip to Box: Follows the box shape to clip the shading. An example shown below.
g. Shading Outset: The shading outset can be increased or decreased (with + or – values) to go text shading inside or outside the text length. The text shading can go beyond the text box boundaries. An example below shows with an increased outset value.
  1. Frame Outset: The frame outset causes frame to stay within text box boundary
  1. If multiple paragraphs share identical paragraph and text shading style attributes, it will combine the shading boundaries and framing as a single shading object. However, if paragraph attributes and/or text shading attributes (including frame values) shading is applied as multiple frames/objects. As examples shown below:
  1. Frame options: You can choose to enable/disable frame on each side as shown below example where frame is applied only to the left and right.
  1. This is a better alternative than to apply custom underline through stylesheet.
  1.  The Text Shading Styles can be referred in Paragraph and Character styles sheets or you can directly apply on the text from Text Shading style palette. When shading applied from Text Shading Styles palette, a paragraph and/or character stylesheet override mark is indicated.
