How does "Item Knocks out Drop Shadow" work?

Background: Drop Shadow is an effect where an image is repeated behind itself to create the illusion that the image is floating over its background. In QuarkXPress, you can use “Item Knocks out Drop Shadow” feature to prevent a shadow from displaying through semi- opaque areas of an item.

  1. Create a text box and add some text to it.
  2. Give yellow drop shadow to text box with Magenta color to text box.

  3.  Create another text box with cyan color and send this text box back to the first box.
  4.  Now only the first box will be visible.
  5. Select the first text box and set the opacity to 33 %, now the second box will be visible but its actual color will appear faded because of the drop shadow applied to first text box.

  6.  Select the first text box again and go to drop shadow in the measurement palette and check-mark “Item knocks out Drop Shadow”.

  7.   Once applied the first text box will knock out its drop shadow and the actual cyan color of the second text box will be visible.
