How to Launch Server with a Different Startup Configuration.

How to Launch Server with a Different Startup Configuration.

QuarkXPress Server can be configured to run in the following manners:

  • Threadme: Provides both HTTP and Xpress document rendering/processing in a single executable.
  • Master-Subrender: Provides HTTP in Master executable and Xpress document Processing/rendering in different executables called Subrenders.
  • No User Interface: Run with UI Hidden in background (even with subrenderers)
  • Service: Run as service on machine startup.


To launch Server with different launching configurations:

  • If you are running QuarkXPress Server 8.x, you need to update the “QuarkXPressServer.config” file created in installed folder location of QuarkXPress Server and edit it as follows:

    Open the file in a text editor and make the following changes to launch it in Threadme mode:

    COMMANDLINE=-Threadme
    COMMANDLINE=-Threadme -noui
  • Open the file in a text editor and make the following changes to launch it in Master-Subrenderer mode:

    COMMANDLINE=-subrenders n
    COMMANDLINE=-subrenders n -noui


    Note!: Adding noui will ensure that QuarkXPress Server will run with no User Interface.

If you are running QuarkXPress Server 7.x, the configuration needs to be modified in the command line as described below:

How to launch QuarkXPress Server under Windows with Command Line changes:

  1. Got to Run and launch the Command Prompt window.
  2. Change the directory to the QuarkXPress Server folder.
    Example: cd 'C:\Program Files\Quark\QuarkXPress Server 7.2\QuarkXPress Server'
  3. Add the -subrenders n (number of subrenders) in the end and press Enter.
    Example:  QuarkXPress Server.exe -subrenders n
  4. Press Enter.

An alternate method to accomplish the same this can be used outside of the Command Line.

  1. Right click on the application shortcut and go to Properties.
  2. In the Target field add the -subrenders n (number of subrenders)
    Example: “C:\Program Files\....\QuarkXPress Server.exe” -subrenders n)
  3. Click the Apply or OK button.
  4. Launch the application from the shortcut.

How to Launch QuarkXPress Server on Mac Operating System

  1. Launch Terminal.
  2. Change the directory to the QuarkXPress Server folder.
    Example: cd '/Applications/QuarkXPress Server 7.2/QuarkXPress Server.app/Contents/MacOS'
  3. Run QXPS with subrenders parameter.
    Example:  ./-subrenders n
    QuarkXPress Server -subrenders 2

Alternatively, you can do the same thing by following these steps:

  1. Right click on the application and select Show Package Contents.
  2. Inside the Contents folder go to the MacOS folder.
  3. Drag the QuarkXPress Server file onto a Terminal window.
  4. Type '–subrenders n'
  5. Press Enter.
    Note:  -Threadme and –noui can be set to launch it in Threadme or No UI mode.
