How to Migrate from QPS 3.6 to QPS 7 and QPS 8

To upgrade a QPS site to version 7 or 8, follow the steps detailed below.

Config File Migration:

Pre-requisites:

  1. Java 1.5 should be installed on the machine where the Config File Migrator tool will be run.
  2. The Config File to be migrated should be a checked in Config File of QuarkDispatch 3.6.
  3. The target server (QPS 7 Server) should be a fresh AND un-configured server.
  4. The target server should be running.

Steps:

  1. Configure the target (QPS 7) server’s IP address/hostname in “Config File Migrator\conf\DispatchApp.properties” file
  2. Copy the checked in Config File into the “Config File Migrator” folder
  3. Execute “ConfileFileMigrator.bat” on Windows or “ConfigFileMigrator.sh” on Mac to perform the configuration migration.

Assets Migration:

Pre-requisites:

  1. The System Storage of QPS 7 Server has been configured
  2. All assets should be of QPS 3.6. If not, then the assets should be migrated to QPS 3.6 prior to the QPS 7 or QPS 8 migration.
  3. Config File migration generates a Mapping. file in the “Config File Migrator” folder after the configuration migration. This file should be copied to both the QuarkCopyDesk and the QuarkXPress 7 or 8 folders (to the root level of these folders).
  4. It is recommended that asset migration be run on the file sever machine itself. This will speed up the migration process by data transfer over the network.

First articles should be migrated using QuarkCopyDesk with the XTension QCDMigrationXT.xnt . QuarkXPress Projects, pictures and other source files should be migrated using QuarkXPress 7 or 8 with the XTension QXPMigrationXT.xnt loaded.

The following steps are common for migration for both QuarkCopyDesk and QuarkXPress.

  1. Place the Migration XT in the XTensions folder and the Migration.cfg file in the root level of the QuarkCopyDesk and QuarkXPress folders.
  2. Mount / Map the QPS 3.6 file server on the machine (if it is on a separate machine).
  3. Edit the Migration.cfg file so that it lists the correct paths for the QPS 3.6 file server.
  4. Launch QuarkCopyDesk/QuarkXPress and log on to the target server.
  5. From the Utilities menu, select Migrate Assets.
