How to Make Fractions in QuarkXPress

There are two possible ways to make fractions in QuarkXPress. The method used in QuarkXPress 6.5 and earlier used a 'Superscript/Subscript' styling function. In QuarkXPress 7 and 8, if you have a font that supports specific glyphs for fractions (know in OpenType technology as 'Fraction Number Forms') you can simply type the numerator and denominator of the fraction and QuarkXPress will use the font's Fraction Number Form for the fraction. However, if your font does not support Fraction Number Forms, you will need to use the old method

To apply a Fraction Number Form while using an OpenType or TrueType font, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the OpenType icon in the Measurements palette. This will display the OpenType Pop-up menu.
  2. Select the Fractions option in the pop-up menu.

Note: If the font does not support a certain OpenType feature, the name of the feature will be enclosed in brackets.
  3. Type the desired fraction in your text flow. The font will supply the required Fraction Number Form directly into you text flow.

Note: You can also select OpenType features for a particular font in the Character Style Sheets dialog as a preset for a specific style sheet,. In addition, you can access OpenType features via the Character Attributes dialog (Command Shift D) (Windows: Control Shift D).

If your font does not support Fraction Number Forms,  or if you are working in an older version of QuarkXPress:

  1. Type the two numbers of your fraction with a slash between them (for example '1/2').
  2. Go to Style > Type Style > Make Fraction.
